There's baloney.
And macaroni.
And a huckleberry pie~
Um, wow.

There’s just an alarming number of comments on that webcam hacking video that just completely miss the point. Just completely blow off the situation because to them, bad things only happen to stupid people who aren’t prepared.

Wrong.

First of all, duh it’s staged. To the at least one person I saw who was like, “You know that was an actress, right? There was a credit reel at the end.” Yeah. Duh. Thank you for clearing that up, we were just sooo lost without your insight. It’s not a scary short film because the girl’s character is real - which she isn’t - it’s scary because something like this can actually happen. It actually has happened.

And for everyone making petty comments about “who leaves their laptop open all the time?” you are missing the point.

Missing

the

POINT.

Shoving aside the many less conventional reasons why someone might have their laptop open for listening to music or falling asleep while watching a movie, the point is that that is THEIR BUSINESS. What they do with their private property is THEIR BUSINESS. If you leave your laptop open all the time, or if you leave your monitor on and it has a webcam built in, or in my case if you have a computer-monitor-webcam-all-built-into-one-handy-machine like I do and you don’t want to turn it off every single time you get dressed or go to sleep or masturbate or have sex or what have you, YOU ARE DOING NOTHING WRONG.

A girl or ANY PERSON should be able to feel safe in their own home. They should feel safe with a device that they were promised they would have control over. They should feel safe on their computer or around their computer if they themselves are not poking around on shady places of the internet. You are not wrong for assuming that you are safe and protected in your own house, apartment, or dorm.

People DO take precautions, but this is LIFE, and in life with assholes like webcam hackers lurking about, there is ALWAYS some precaution that you will overlook, some precaution you will forget, and you will ALWAYS be tempted to drop your guard down SOMETIME. And if you’re a woman, asking us to keep our guards up EVERY SECOND OF THE DAY is unfair.

STOP BLAMING THE VICTIM. BLAME THE PEOPLE WHO HACK INTO OTHER PEOPLE’S WEBCAMS, STALK, SPY ON OTHERS, AND INVADE OTHER PEOPLE’S PRIVACY.

STOP BLAMING THE VICTIM.

And girls who are saying that they are too unattractive to spy on? That they don’t look pretty or they don’t look pretty at least when they’re at their computers? You are not safe. You are still not safe. Please do not assume that because you do not look like a model all hours of the day that you are safe from abuse and perverts.

I have a terribly low self-esteem, I hate my body, but I will never forget the moment when in high school I once told my mother that I was “too ugly to rape.” I will never forget the look of fury on my mother’s face. I learned something that night, something that every woman has to learn eventually.

There are some men out there who are so twisted, so depraved, so dangerous, that they will hurt anyone. They do not make exceptions. In fact they might assume that because you don’t have a perfect figure and that because you don’t have a perfect face that no one will believe you when you say you’ve been sexually assaulted. They see you as an easy target.

You are in just as much danger as the supermodels out there. Don’t believe the media when it tells you that a man who wants to rape you will be turned off by simple tricks like not wearing make-up or dressing more conservatively or not styling your hair or letting your figure go. Be safe. Be aware.
