Artemisia Gentileschi is an amazing historical figure. A survivor who endured torture and humiliation when she tried to convict the man who raped her, she is famous for her beautifully rendered paintings of defiant women enacting violence upon men. Above are Judith Slaying Holofernes, Judith and Maidservant, and Jael and Sisera. It is rumored that Judith Beheading Holofernes is a self-portrait, in which Judith was painted in Gentileschi’s likeness and Holofernes was modeled after her rapist.
bloody inspiring!
Survivors of violence carry the scent, the scar, the ghosts, the thunder and lightning of deadly storm in their hearts. Even if they spend all day smiling, even when they are happy. They own this and they have every right to. It was gifted them and at any time they are empowered to gift it back. Think twice.
I’ve always loved the sheer anger and hate her paintings evoke. You can see these paintings were a way for her to deal with the anger and pain she must have felt, and they always leave me in awe.
I remember learning about this woman in class. Her paintings are haunting and beautiful indeed, although so tragic because you can see just how badly she suffered. Her story is amazing also when one realizes that back then most women simply weren’t allowed to become great painters. Art in that part of the world during that time period was for men only, so she was overcoming that obstacle as well.
