Everyone has rolls when they bend over. Everyone. Lets just get this out of the way right off the bat. In the last few months, I’ve had over 30 women ranging from rail thin to extra large naked in my bed and I would routinely ask them to hug their knees. You won’t believe this… ALL OF THEM HAD TUMMY ROLLS. Not one was exempt. Even my super fabulous professional model 6 foot tall and some amazing Katie had rolls. The stomach pictures turned into some of my favorite images from the project… so quit thinking they’re bad, and try accepting (dare I say embracing?) yours!

When people say “you’re gorgeous”, believe them. I tend not to, and it’s a cryin’ shame. When people genuinely compliment you, it’s because they really see it. Try to not dismiss their perspective as wrong and assume that you know better. They see all of you. We see our flaws. Believe them.

“Arm flab is embarrassing.” No its not, go fuck yourself. No, not you. The people who tell us that, silly.

You’re not stunning despite your body. You’re stunning because of your body. There is a distinct difference. I grew up in a culture that would deem “unattractive” women as “special spirits”. A degrading categorization that implied that the only thing worthwhile was whatever was inside. Well, yeah. We are all much much more than our bodies, but our bodies are a beautiful part of us too. Beauty comes from the inside AND the outside. I am of the firm belief that every person is beautiful, and so this leaves the inside to be the part that is the most telling when it comes to true “beauty”.

A guy can pick you up off your feet, and it won’t break his back. “Wait, whaaaaaa Jes? You’re full of shit.” Nope. This just happened to me for the first time in… six years? I’m considerably heavier than I was 6 years ago (like… 70 pounds heavier) and so when I ran up to my friend Eric for a hug and he picked me up with my heels in the air… it left me breathless. I had forgotten that it was possible; I had accepted a life void of being lifted. So exhilarating. Eric didn’t suffer any injuries and walked away unscathed.

You don’t need to exercise every day in order to feel better about yourself. Many believe that someone who’s fat needs to exercise as much as possible in order to prove that they’re committed to becoming “less fat”. As if accepting one’s body as is would be a sin, and that’s just silly. Yes, exercising has wonderful physical and mental benefits, but you don’t owe it to anyone else to make an effort to change your body unless you wanna. You do not have to alter yourself to be okay. Period.

You’re allowed to fall in love with yourself. I promise. This will be the scariest thing you will ever do, and that’s okay. It will also be the most amazing (albeit super gradual) experience you will ever have. It doesn’t make you narcissistic. It doesn’t make you vain. It is liberating in every form of the word.

It’s also okay to have days where you don’t love yourself. Read this. No really. Read it. And then realize that we’ve grown up learning and internalizing that we are not okay our entire life. For me, that’s 26 years of self-hate indoctrination and brainwashing. It’s going to take a lot longer than you think to reverse this thinking, and it’s definitely not going to happen overnight. Allow yourself to have “weak” days. Cry, mourn, sob, yell, throw things. Whichever. Then get up, brush yourself off, give the media the finger, and move forward because you’re a warrior.

Everyone’s boobs are uneven. If you have a lot of boobs, they might be way uneven. Don’t stress. This is totally normal.

There are people who prefer large ladies. And I mean all sizes of large. I thought that my best bet in life was to find a partner who accepted my fat. Pause. Give me a minute to hang my head and shake it at myself. Not only are there people who adore “thick” women, but a LOT of them who prefer it. This eventually ends up in an interesting territory which Marianne talks about here, but the point that I’m trying to make goes back to the “despite vs because of” argument. Here is what you need to know: you do NOT need to settle for a lover who is “okay” with your body. You have the right (and millions of opportunities) to find someone who is infatuated with your body. You deserve to be worshiped, woman!

Fat chicks bang hot guys… ALL. THE. TIME.I know that hot is relative and all inclusive depending on who you chat with, but for these purposes, lets talk about the “universally attractive” kind of hot. Y’know, the kind fat chicks don’t deserve? We want to pretend that we don’t know what I’m talking about, but lets be real; we totally do. The fact that “fat chicks bang ‘hot’ guys” was one of the most powerful realizations I’ve had thus far. In line with the above paragraph, I knew that there would be someone that would find me attractive but the pool would be small (because of my body) and potentially full of guys I didn’t personally find sexy. So I would have to settle for anyone that would take me. After all, how could a conventionally gorgeous man (tall and with tattoos of course) like fat chicks? Weh-he-hell, let me tell you somethin’: through various sites, events, parties, and corner store meetings, I found myself with over a hundred men who were champing at the bit to get with this. I was the one who had to sift through and pick the hottest of the hot. Ladies, over a hundred. “Girls” showed what society thinks about that when Hannah’s character has a weekend romance with an attractive and wealthy doctor. People flipped their shit. “Patrick Wilson is so hot he would never do Lena Dunham” was the most eye catching. Wilson’s wife responded to that rubbish here, but the tweet speaks volumes about what the majority of people think unconventional women deserve. Jesus christ, it’s annoying. I won’t spill the details of my bedroom coming and goings, but lets just say this: the hottest guys in Tucson and I get along just fine. I would recommend reading Emily’s article on xoJane for a better explanation of what I’m struggling to say. Know this: the myth that “atypical” bodies can’t be paired with “typically attractive” bodies is false. Women need to know that all bodies can be paired with all bodies.

Riding during sex will NOT collapse his insides. Just trust me on this one, what you fear is totally false. Here’s a great article that changed my life.

Wearing whatever you want is a political statement. Join the revolution. Throw style rules out the window. Wear the tutu. Wear the horizontal stripes. Wear the turquoise skinny jeans. Wear the see-through blouse. Wear the bikini. Wear the sweat pants. Wear the shirt that says “Does this shirt make me look fat?”. Wear whatever it is that makes you happy. This is your life.

You are fucking beautiful. I’m saying this with a straight face and seriously meaningful look where I maintain eye contact for an uncomfortable amount of time. I know you don’t feel like you fit into the category of gorgeous that our world creates. I know that its hard. I know that its a daily battle. But fuck their fascist beauty standards. The second you stop looking for a skinny model in your mirror and start looking at YOU… is the second you will start to appreciate what you are. Stop looking for flaws. Stop looking for differences. You are perfect. You are more than enough. You are the best thing that has ever happened to you. And you are fucking beautiful.

Say it with me.

This…is so very wonderful. I’ve always had low self-esteem, but gaining so much weight in the past few years and having trouble shaking it off has made things worse. I came to accept that no one would be interested in me sexually or romantically again, which I suppose I can say is not true now. One of the other things I struggle with is clothing. When I’m daring enough to wear something different, if it’s not me who tears myself apart, someone else tells me the outfit is unflattering on me. Then there’s the fact that I wear shorts. A woman at the grocery store as she passed said, “Girl, you need to put on some clothes.” I wear them anyway despite what others think, because I live in Texas, it’s hot, and my options are already so limited. I want to lose weight and become the old me, but the task is so daunting. Until then, I’m sick of the fat-shaming and the shame I feel towards myself. Because I wasn’t always this way I’m still not used to the changes, the sudden anxiety I feel when I catch my reflection in a window and see someone in it that is much more fat than I realized. There are things I used to do that I can’t now. So…thank you for this post. It’s a nice bit of hope.

rainbowpenguintattoo:

It reminds me of that famous Margaret Atwood quote: “Men are afraid that women will laugh at them. Women are afraid that men will kill them.” It also reminds me of something written by one of the mods of Sex Worker Problems: “Misandry irritates.
Saw this somewhere else and felt the need to post it cause no one else ever really tells you this stuff

My mom never really noticed. She noticed when she was breast feeding my little brother and blood started coming out instead of milk.

My mom said she felt and saw a little lump in the shower. She was lucky enough she found it at stage 2

My mom had a mammogram. The radiologist thought the spots were just regular calcium deposits.

Turns out it was triple negative breast cancer that had spread to her lymph nods. Mastectomy, radiation and chemo saved her life.

This could SAVE a life.

Signal BOOST and pass it on. I had a breast cancer scare before (luckily it was just scar tissue…) and information like this kept me calm and collected at the doc’s.

I, uh, started writing down some thoughts that were supposed to be some idle statements about...

I, uh, started writing down some thoughts that were supposed to be some idle statements about things I’ve been pondering lately, but then it turned into this…really big essay thing. It’s just stuff that’s been on my mind, so I’d rather not get into any heated arguments over the things I’m talking about. Feel free to refute me of course and debate all you like, tear it apart by all means. I’m just warning you that I probably won’t respond in a satisfying manner. I’m tired these days and I guess I already know that there are many who find my ideas stupid and unrealistic, ha. So, um, here. I should have added pictures and read over it but it’s three in the morning. Yup.

As plenty of you know, Les Miserables is a thing I hold near and dear to my heart. It’s one of those things that come in and out of my life and each time I learn something new about it, like some detail I had originally missed, some telling of the story, some bits of trivia (tonight my mom and I finished the 1950s movie and it is the. biggest. betrayal. to the source material. EVER. A post on that later. Maybe.)

Les Mis is a story that has much to say and expresses it through many perspectives. It’s easy to latch on to bits of the story at a time. Some days I’ll think mostly about the tragedy of Fantine as I sing to myself, sometimes I listen to the progression of the revolution over and over, other times I am swept up in the fascinating clashes between Valjean and Javert.

I also keep coming back to it because there’s nothing on earth quite like it. While there are many stories that swell in my heart and deposit within me a dire need to find a sword in my backyard somewhere so I can go slay evil to the bellowing of an escalating choir, Les Mis is one of those rare tales that sweeps me up not only into a passion for revolution and resistance toward the forces Enjolras faces, but also leaves within me a wish, a need to display that kind of defiance in my own time.

The more I get to know Les Mis, the more I see just how timeless it actually is. Most stories about war and suffering are, because as a species we seem destined to never shake those things, but Victor Hugo’s story goes deeply and then even deeper still into practically every aspect of human nature. What inspires us to perform great deeds and what coaxes us to act upon our more vengeful, selfish impulses? What really makes a person good, obeying the law even when it harms others or turning away from society’s general opinion to care for those in need? Who is more righteous, a man who punishes “sinners” in the name of God or a man who lifts others onto his back selflessly even as he strives towards the difficult path to God himself? For that matter, are we good in order to please God who is separate from us and existing among the stars, or does God live inside of us and in the kind acts we perform?

As an agnostic who is very much anti-Christian, I can still appreciate how Victor Hugo writes about the religion because he sees that it does different things for different people, and more importantly, he sees the importance of people. Much of my hatred for organized religion spawns from the way Judeo-Christian-Islamic type religions claim that human beings are at the top of the food chain and are allowed to exploit every last resource on this earth while at the very same time these religions completely rob human beings of self-recognition. If someone discovers something that changes our lives for the better, it is a gift from God, not the product of a brilliant and dedicated human being. This sort of shift happens everywhere; when a surgeon saves your loved one’s life, when people come together to heal a community destroyed by misfortune, when an ordinary person becomes a hero in an act of sudden courage…these are all said to be miracles of God. We deny ourselves as a people to recognize our own power. It makes sense though - we’ve been taught to do that since the very beginning of our kind. When the people recognize they have power, it’s dangerous for those human beings who have declared that they are the ones who deserve the top shelf.

The thing that has been on my mind quite frequently lately is the concept of poverty. The subject of poverty is one of the biggest and most important themes of the Les Miserables story. It wouldn’t be a story about “The Miserable” if it didn’t address the strange and immortal phenomenon that is poverty.

I call poverty a strange phenomenon because it is strange. When we enter this world, take our first looks around, we come to one conclusion very fast: some of us have a lot, some of us have enough to get by with a little extra comfort, some of us have just enough to continue to live, and some of us have nothing but the clothes on our backs. Whether or not we are told this, we believe very quickly that that this is how the world has always been, and this is how the world will always be. At one point or another, you looked upwards at an adult and asked innocently, “Why are there poor people?” More than likely, in varying degrees of harsh truth depending on how old you were at the time, you were probably told that some people being poor is inevitable. And then you grew up. Maybe you donated to a cause or a charity, or worked more directly with the impoverished and truly tried to make a difference, but either way, you thought the same that most of us do: there will always be someone who is poor and in need of help.

Then, there’s a number of people who still believe that poverty is not exactly necessary for the world to go on. They believe that the world did not have to be this way. Whether or not they believe in a cure, they do believe that poverty is a concept that was constructed early on in human history, and for uncountable reasons we never let the concept go. Little by little, I’ve become one of those people.

There’s a fantastic animated documentary that sums up the idea in a much more entertaining and informed way than I ever could, and I urge you to watch it. It’s entitled Poor Us, and for a very important reason. No matter how well off you are, it is entirely likely that you are one of an endless sea of worker bees, enslaved by a system that doesn’t leave much for improvement or change even in your own individual story, not unless you have some kind of advantage over the others. The middle class we know today is an invention created in the last century. You’re not poor, you’re not rich, you are in the middle. You know you aren’t likely to strike oil and shoot to the top, but you aren’t starving either, so you’re content to go with how things are. Maybe you’re happy with how things are, maybe you aren’t but don’t want to get hurt. This is how a system continues to thrive.

Human history starts with all of us on equal ground. Whatever you believe happened during the beginning of humankind, whether it was evolution or magical clay springing to life ala Frosty the Snowman, it’s something you can’t deny. When you do not have possessions, and no one else has possessions, you are the same. The main concern was to survive, and the means you had to do it did not change your status. If you have a spear and your hunting buddy doesn’t, does that make you rich and him poor? If he has clothing and you do not does that make him the rich one? It isn’t really worth it to make a choice, because at this point, poverty did not exist. You were either alive or dead, sick or healthy, starving or getting along alright. These things didn’t make you higher or lower than anyone else because all of us were struggling for the same basic needs, the odds such as environment, predators, and weather being some of the few things that spiced things up a bit.

This did not change when we began to form communities. Even when the tasks are divided, class is not necessarily invented. A chief doesn’t necessarily have more possessions than his tribe until he starts demanding it. Poverty was born out of this sort of demand. As the human population grew bigger, it became more and more acceptable for someone to be in charge, ostensibly because we needed organization. Organization became commandments and laws, those on top sought tribute for leading the civilians and had these laws to protect themselves and justify executions, and from that point on it the idea of the necessary poor and the important rich becomes a virus that spreads from a small source of greed and pollutes every contradicting philosophy in order to survive.

The excuses changed from era to era - “As your leader I am practically a God and deserve tributes to keep my wrath at bay” - “You owe me compensation for protecting your land with my knights, serf” - “I’m going to use these taxes to better the nation, I swear” - but the story is always the same.

Where there is a small community with no concept of poverty and only an interest in survival, a greater civilization will come to crush and enslave it. When a resource is picked to represent money or wealth, then begins a crusade across the world to enforce that concept, be it gold or oil or even seashells, until we’re all killing each other over a symbolic token of non-existent value that will become completely obsolete as soon as the next conqueror comes along and deems your currency absolutely useless. The theory of economics is only that - a theory. A theory that has absolutely no sure way of predicting the future because human beings cannot always be predicted, circumstances can arise that will change everything, and patterns can change or cease to be altogether.

A common thing to say is that communism looks good on paper, but it will never work because of the corrupt nature of humankind. Yet I never hear anyone say that about economies based on ideas like capitalism, which is a corrupt model from its very design. With capitalism there is absolutely no pretense of equality, it bluntly states that equality is impossible and unwanted. Colonialism, slavery, industrialization, conquest, expansion, war, and of course, a good slice of poverty are all necessary ingredients in the recipe of capitalism. We even know this and still we say that all of these things are inevitable now that we’ve been pushing the agenda for so long. We’ve relied on slaves too long, we’ve relied on the poor too long, we’ve relied on the working class too long, to relieve them of their pain without society collapsing, or so the story goes.

And here, after my long and vague tangent, I bring Les Miserables back into the discussion. What makes the story timeless is that it’s a tale about the burden of poverty and about the fight to save our own lives. It’s a story that literally forces you to “Look down upon your fellow man,” at the so-called scum of the earth, and to see the human beings we crush under our feet in the name of progress. The prostitutes, the street urchins, the criminals, the beggars, the diseased and famished are invisible because to stop ignoring them is to start analyzing our own part in making this world a better place or a worse one, either by our actions or by sitting passively by.

Nothing has changed since Victor Hugo’s time and the time of the June Rebellion in which Les Miserables is set. These are still the people we ignore for the sake of our own sanity, because if we recognize them we realize just how deep of a pit has been buried beneath our feet and is rising all around us. More bodies will be tossed into the pit, more and more until the hungry beast that are the people on top of society can no longer find meat. There is no end to their gluttony, and so long as we divide ourselves further and further by our annual incomes, our assets, our debts, we will only sink lower and only a slim few will remain on top.

You are being exploited. No matter where you work, no matter what you do, you are being exploited. The mere fact that you exist means you are being exploited. For every second that our resources continue to all go to a slim amount of people who have killed for it while you have to make any sort of sacrifice, you are being exploited. We are a generation of people who will never be paid what we are worth. We are a generation of people who will die with debts still left unpaid.

The June Rebellion and the former French Revolution discussed in Les Miserables explain exactly what has happened every time any one of us has tried to fight back. The people become poor enough, oppressed enough, to become angry, they rise, they revolt, they riot, they rebel, they start a revolution. Sometimes, like The June Rebellion, the revolution is crushed into the concrete and made an example of. Watching students being impaled by bayonets and crumpling to the ground from gun wounds in the alleys of Paris was enough to make the people behave again for a little while longer yet. Other times, as with the French Revolution, the movement is large enough to overthrow the system that has wronged its people and robbed them of their lives and dignity…but successful political upheaval is always hijacked by leaders who encourage the fall of the state only so they can seize it for themselves.

Over and over, whatever the cause, somehow, no matter the revolution’s good intentions, the real heroes are slain and the cunning rise to start the process of taking again, and by the time anyone realizes it, it is too late. The new state is too strong. It will wear different masks like communism or democracy, but the nature of the beast underneath never changes.

This is so for another one of the most famous revolutions that people still define as successful and just: The American Revolution. It was a revolution that belonged to everyone…but the reins were quickly stolen by a select group of high class, land-owning, well-educated white men representing the interest of - imagine that - high class, land-owning, well-educated white men. Some of them had good intentions. There were plenty though who knew exactly what they were doing when they shaped this country into a system that still supported slavery and the concept of white supremacy, a system that required most people to be poor but with the promise that they could move up if they worked hard enough, a system that gave votes only to a privileged few, a system that continued to treat women like property that was to be seen but not heard, a system that while nicely written on paper, turned out not to work because of human nature, because here we are today with a collapsing economy and a society filled with hate, prejudice, and corruption.

Many of the uprisings in the United States were of the crushed-and-made-an-example of variety. Some eventually gave way to change with the slow granting of rights. But those in charge have often dragged their feet on these compromises, and the racism, sexism, homophobia, classicism, etc. that created the need for these movements in the first place are still alive and well. “Women and people of color already have equal rights, what more do they want?” We’ve invented the concept of having all the rights you can deserve, or having too many rights. The oppressed are not allowed to ask for the right to inclusion, the right to proper protection from a corrupt police force, the right to a safe environment for their children, the right to being recognized as still unequal and violated and taken advantage of…because they have the right to vote.

As with Neo in The Matrix accepting that there is no spoon, we too must someday accept that parts of our society have been invented, we must learn to recognize an ongoing lie that controls our actions and makes us complacent, and most importantly, we must think and ask ourselves the hard questions. We must look down. We must look at ourselves.

I’m not so naive as to think that things can return to the way they were. With the condition of the world today, there are too many of us to feed, too many of us who are privileged, too many of us who would rather ravage the planet than elect to live a more simple life. What good will it do anyway? How are you going to break the chain that forces you to rely or at least have to comply to the authorities that govern you? You can’t have that simple lifestyle without giving up practically everything except the bare minimum. I’m one of those people who resists this commitment.

So if there is no winning, or at least a very small chance, why bother fighting? I think what I’ve learned through history, through stories like Les Miserables, through the people I know, and through the things I’ve seen, is that just because it’s likely we will never win, never for good, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t stop fighting.

Hope. That promising idea that somewhere beyond the barricade, there is a world you long to see.

It is better, I think, to fight for something you believe in, even if you only ever try it once. It is better to know and to read and to speculate and to think. It is better to look down and spare a glance at the unfortunate, hurtful reality below our feet. It is better to know that while your leaders have made you a slave to money and debt, that you know what they’re doing. You know what it is they’re doing. Be angry and spit in their eye when you can. Live your life with faith, but store that faith in people, who every day accomplish great things that every divine force we have conjured in our minds refuses to do. Store that faith in the people who do try to make a difference, whether it’s by trying to better the government or by dismantling what it stands for today. Your loyalty and love should go to the people around you and below you, not the people on top that refuse to look down and show mercy.

Acts of charity are not charity at all when one does them for rewards such as attention or even a good shot at making it through the pearly gates. Charity: another thing invented so that the rich may benefit from their kindness by earning a better seat in heaven.

Jean Valjean turned away from a life of despair and hatred because of a single act of the sympathy he’d never known before. He took that sympathy and spread it far and wide to every person he touched since. I don’t think it’s farfetched to say that as human beings, we can do the same. Maybe that’s the revolution we need.

Oh God, this was on TV years ago and my family still talk about it! He’s a wee penguin who lives in Japan; he was rescued by a Japanese fisherman, and ended up going home to live with the family. They built him a little refrigerator room to live in, and he became the family pet. Then one day he went shopping with them, and got very excited about the fish shop (understandably!) and now he goes off on his own to pick up fish from the fish shop for the family, which he brings back in his little penguin backpack, having nommed his own fish at the fish shop. IT IS THE BEST THING EVER.
